Pallet Jack FAQ

Pallet Jack: Frequently asked questions.

How do I get a pallet jack certification?

To get certified to operate a pallet jack (also known as a pallet truck), you must complete an OSHA-compliant training program under 29 CFR 1910.178. This includes:

  • Formal instruction – online or classroom-based theory
  • Hands-on training – with supervision on the equipment
  • Operator evaluation – by a qualified trainer

Employers are responsible for providing this training and documenting the certification process.

Do you need a certificate for a pallet jack?

Yes, OSHA requires a certificate for operating a powered pallet jack. Manual pallet jacks do not require certification, but training is still recommended. For powered models (Class III electric pallet trucks), operator certification is mandatory under 29 CFR 1910.178(l).

Do you have to be OSHA certified to use a pallet jack?

You must be OSHA-certified to use a powered pallet jack. OSHA does not personally certify individuals but requires that employers provide training, evaluation, and documentation per 29 CFR 1910.178. Manual pallet jacks are exempt but should still be introduced through basic safety training.
