Trainer Certification FAQ

Forklift Train-the-Trainer Certification: Frequently Asked Questions

Does OSHA require a forklift trainer to be certified?

OSHA does not issue a forklift trainer license, but it requires that every trainer be qualified. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii), trainers must have the knowledge, training, and experience to teach others how to safely operate forklifts. In practice, this means a forklift trainer must already be a certified forklift operator and have enough hands-on experience to evaluate others safely.

How long is forklift trainer certification good for?

A forklift trainer certification is valid for three years, just like an operator certification. After three years, trainers should complete refresher training or take a Train-the-Trainer course to stay up to date with OSHA standards, new equipment, and current safety practices.

How do you become a forklift trainer?

To become a certified forklift trainer, you must:
1. Hold a current OSHA forklift operator certification.
2. Complete an OSHA-compliant Train-the-Trainer course.
3. Learn how to deliver classroom training, lead hands-on instruction, and conduct operator performance evaluations.
Once you finish training, you can legally train and certify forklift operators within your organization.

Can I get Train-the-Trainer certification online?

Yes. The formal instruction portion of Train-the-Trainer certification can be completed online. However, OSHA still requires a hands-on evaluation by a qualified instructor to confirm your ability to safely operate and teach forklift operation. Many online programs, like CertifyMe.net, offer blended courses combining online learning with on-site practice.

What qualifications do I need to become a trainer?

To qualify as a forklift trainer, you need:
