Warehouse Forklift FAQ

Warehouse Forklift: Frequently asked questions

What type of forklift is used in a warehouse?

Class 1 forklifts are electric motor rider trucks used indoors on smooth floors — they’re quiet, emission-free, and ideal for warehouses.
Class 4 forklifts use internal combustion engines with cushion tires, suited for indoor operations on concrete surfaces where ventilation is available.
Class 5 forklifts also use internal combustion engines but with pneumatic tires, making them rugged enough for outdoor or uneven terrain.

Key points:

  • Class 1: Electric, indoor use, no emissions.

  • Class 4: Gas/LPG, indoor use, cushion tires.

  • Class 5: Gas/LPG, indoor/outdoor use, pneumatic tires.

What are the safety rules for forklifts in a warehouse?

OSHA outlines key safety rules for forklift operation in warehouse environments under 29 CFR 1910.178:

  • Only trained and certified operators may use forklifts.
  • Daily inspections must be completed before use.
  • Seat belts must be worn at all times.
  • Maintain safe speeds and use horns at intersections.
  • Keep loads stable, secure, and within rated capacity.
  • Ensure adequate visibility and avoid obstructed views.
  • Pedestrian safety must be prioritized—use warning lights and alarms.

Violations of these rules can lead to severe penalties and increased workplace injury risk.

What does OSHA require for forklift certification?

OSHA requires that all forklift operators be trained and certified under 29 CFR 1910.178(l). Certification involves:

  1. Formal instruction (e.g., online or classroom learning)
  2. Practical training (hands-on with the forklift)
  3. Evaluation by a qualified trainer

The employer must keep documentation of:

  • Operator’s name
  • Training and evaluation dates
  • Name of the trainer/evaluator

Certification must be renewed every three years or sooner if:

  • The operator is involved in an incident
  • Unsafe operation is observed
  • A new type of equipment is introduced
